Presentation skill - How to prepare and sample presentation
I. Handling Presentations
Presentations must have a clear and realistic purpose. The purpose of your presentation indicates how you want to achieve the aim of your presentation. The purpose can be: to describe, to instruct, to persuade or to entertain.
Describe
In this type of presentation the aim is usually to give information or explain a situation. The content is often rather general and factual. When the speech is over the audience should
have knowledge that they did not have before they started listening.
Instruct
In this type of presentation the aim is to teach the audience knowledge and skills. After the presentation the listener should be able to do something he did not know how to do.
Persuade
In this type of presentation the aim is to stimulate people to do something. After the presentation you want the listener to believe something he did not believe before he started listening.
Entertain
In this type of presentation the aim is to entertain people. The aim of this type of presentation is mostly to make the audience feel happy, but there may be hidden goals. For example, to reveal
important truths or move ideas forward.A Crucial element in this type is humour. For most people it is very difficult to give a humorous presentation because the humour is not spontaneous.
Task 1: Read this introduction to a presentation. Choose the correct word or phrases in italics:
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen and welcome (1) in/to/ for our seminar on corporate property development. I would like to (2) begin/starting/commence by (3) drawing /telling/ outlining some of the main (4) explanations/matters/issues in corporate property management (5) so that/for/in order you will be able to judge whether your company is devoting sufficient time to this question.
I will then (6) look/turn/change to some of the legal and financial (7) queries/aspects/pieces of property management, and will (8) tell /look/explain how your companies may be affected by
current and future legislation. I will (9) illustrate/give examples/ discuss of the kinds of problems our clients have faced and explain what was done to solve them.
I will finish (10) by/with/giving a brief resume of the consultancy services that we offer, and I will explain what you (11) need/shall/should do if you would like to look into the matter further.
As we are rather (12) hurried/pressed/short for time, I would be grateful if you could (13) rest/stay/save any questions you may wish to (14) rise/raise/arise until the end, when I will (15) do/ make/have my best to answer them.
Task 2: The introductions to two different presentations are jumbled below. Separate the two and put them in the correct order.
a. At the end, I will suggest practical ways in which you as students can motivate yourselves to get better marks.
b. Good morning students and welcome to our session on the dynamics of motivation.
c. Then I will give you a short demonstration of our prototype and explain what we have already achieved.
d. Please feel free to raise any questions at any time and I shall do my best to answer them.
e. To begin with, I shall outline the main goals of the project.
f. I would like to ask you to keep any questions you may have until the end, when I hope we will also have the time to discuss your personal experiences.
g. Finally I shall move on to the major commercial applications and potential return on investment.
h. I will then return to what we really mean by motivation and look at the internal and external factors that play a part in creating it.

Getting the most out of meetings
Getting the most out of meetings
If you work for a company where meetings are held in English, you may have had one or these problems:
- being unable to say what you mean clearly and concisely
- being unable to interrupt others to make a point
- being unable to prevent others from interrupting you
- being unable to understand others – especially if they joke, go off the point, or speak too quickly
- being unable to understand what the action points are – and what you're expected to do
- being unable to concentrate for long periods of time on complex or detailed discussions
- being shy (not willing to initiate a discussion, even though you have plenty of things to say)
Some of these problems occur because the meeting is disorganised or lacks a clear focus and objective. Sometimes the chair can't control the meeting – to make sure that people have enough time to get their points across, or to prevent others from taking up too much time, or going off the point. In many cases, "successful" meetings can be achieved by setting a suitable time limit, having a clear (but not over-ambitious) agenda, and by preventing interruptions and disturbances.
However, participants at a meeting also have an obligation to respect others' time, to contribute meaningfully and appropriately, and to be well-prepared. Here are some tips to help you avoid the most common problems in meetings – and to help you get the most from them.

Personality Development
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT
Many people mistake the physical appearance and various external characteristics of an individual and his or her personality. As they talk about a marvelous personality they may refer to the height, weight, stature and complexion. Well, if you think that it is just the appearance of the physique of a person that determines the personality ,it is time to have a rethink. It is true that physical appearance does matter. However, since most of them are beyond our power and control, it is useless to waste our time and energy thinking on them. Though physical appearance can help, there are many other aspects that contribute greatly to one’s personality.
Today, personality is considered the “Brand Image’ of an individual. In simple terms it is made up of three aspects namely:
Character
Behavior
Attitude
Basically, personality development is the improvement of behavior, communication skills, interpersonal relationships, attitude towards life and ethics. Character can be considered the basic factor in determining and individual’s personality. There are several psychologists who say that improving character and behavior alone will largely influence one’s personality. It is a fact that all other factors behind a powerful personality will become useless if the person lacks a good character and behavior.
Personality is like a building. Just as a building can exist only when it has a strong foundation, a personality can impress others only when it has a formidable basis. And the strong foundation is supplied by character and behavior. If personality is developed on the solid base of values and ethics, it will last forever. Fake smiles and mannerisms may attract others for a comparatively short period. However they are shot-lived and do not help in improving one’s personality.
Good behavior and co-operation makes a man popular. As a result the possibilities of his progress and success are much more. Different people have different opinions about what makes a man’s personality complete. There are several scientists who have the view point that character does not form a part of personality, but Seven Covey, one of the all time great authors and motivators says the best personality should be based on the solid foundation of character.
The person who wants to improve his personality has to have a desire and determination; he has to identify the direction for his goals to achieve it. Once all the above three steps are taken he has to dedicate himself to the task of achieving his goal. Every human being is a unique creature. therefore, in addition to the various common components, each one should develop his or her characteristics of personality. Always remember that blindly following someone else who is successful will never take you in the direction right for you.
There are immense possibilities within you to develop your personality with strong character you must recognize and understand them. The key to success is hidden with you. The wealth you have earned is not important but what is important is the means you have adopted for acquiring that wealth. Your personality, your capabilities, your thoughts and your ideals are all very important in determining your character.
